Childminding during COVID-19

Categories:

Childmding during COVID-19 – as we get used to our new normal, parents are starting to return to work and are starting to bring childminders back into their homes. As a childminder or nanny it is up to you to make the decide whether or not you feel comfortable returning to work.

There are a number of things which you need to consider which we will look at below. With careful planning there should be no reason why you can’t return.

Good hygiene practices

At this stage we are all well aware of the need for good hygiene practices, particularly handwashing. It makes good sense to remind and encourage children to wash their hands regularly. Try and encourage good cough etiquette with the children you mind.

Wash your hands:

  • on entering the home
  • before and after preparing meals
  • after coughing or sneezing
  • after using the toilet
  • after changing a nappy
  • prior to leaving the home

The HSE has produced guidance on handwashing.

Face Masks

Face masks, while not mandatory, are encouraged. They are known to reduce the spread of COVID. It may take children a few days to get used to seeing you wearing a mask and try to explain to them why you are wearing one. Also, be conscious of speaking louder and clearer when you are wearing the mask.

Be aware

If the children you are minding are showing any symptoms of the viral infection inform the parents immediately. Be alert at all times to any changes in the children’s health. If a child starts to feel unwell contact the parents immediately. Social distancing between you and the children you mind is not necessary but try and maintain social distance between you and the parents.

Symptoms to be alert for:

  • Fever (high temperature – 38 degrees Celsius or above)
  • Cough – this can be any kind of cough, not just dry
  • Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties

Payment of wages

Where possible ask the parents to pay you electronically if they are not doing so already to avoid handling cash. We offer a payroll solution for parents and you ask the parents to contact directly to set up. More details can be found on our Payroll page.
